Black cherries, once heralded in the Netherlands as a beautiful tree that could also increase soil fertility, then as an invasive scourge that competed with native plants and needed to be eliminated, spread even further throughout the country during eradication efforts. Currently the extinction and climate crises are challenging humanity to think more broadly. What is it that needs to be uprooted if we are to provide care for the natural world? What is it that needs to be planted?
